In today’s article I’ll show the importance of the brightness parameter for advertising screens.

All you see is the light reflected from the surface. The human sight isn’t able to function properly without light. It’s worth thinking about it when we want to understand why the brightness parameter in advertising screens is so important.

In the digital signage, brightness is defined by cd or nit or candela (Latin: candela – candle).

[An interesting fact: before 1948, the unit of luminous intensity was simply 1 candle]

In order to visualize the candela parameter, below there are different light sources and the number of candelas they generate.

Candle – 1 cd
100W light bulb – 100 cd
Standard TV set 250cd
Store lighting 300-1000 cd
Cloudy day 2000 cd
Sunny day 15 000 cd
Sun – 3 x 1027 cd

Advertising screens are used in various spaces, sometimes these are dark premises, e.g. a pub, a restaurant or a cinema. Sometimes it’s the interior of the supermarket, which is illuminated by strong LED light and storefront windows directly exposed to sunlight.

To be visible, the image displayed on the screen must match the brightness of the surroundings. For example, in a supermarket where there is no natural light and LED lighting is installed, we should use a screen of min. brightness of 350-400 cd.

The example of a screen of too low brightness in relation to the surroundings.

The screen to be visible and to stand out in the storefront window in the shopping center should reach brightness of 400-1000 cd.

However, if we want to install a screen in a shop window exposed directly to sunlight, we should use a screen of a brightness parameter of min. 2500 cd.

[An interesting fact: remind yourself a situation in your apartment when sunlight illuminates your TV through the window. The image is very difficult to see. This is an excellent example of the fact that a TV set of brightness of 250 cd isn’t able to give enough light to resist sunlight]

The example of the correct choice of screen brightness. The most demanding conditions occur when the screen in the shop window is exposed to daylight. If the window is made of anti-reflective glass, the effect would be even better.
