What is DS technology? What basic benefits can you get?
Digital signage is literally translated as digitization of characters, that is, replacing standard advertising and information media with their digital counterparts, e.g. a poster ? a screen, a billboard ? a LED screen, etc.

Of course, relating only to this general definition is a considerable simplification. It’s not only about changing the medium but also the way the content is distributed. And the digital signage software is responsible for that.

Using the example of a promotional poster, let’s see how distribution of information in a traditional way and digital signage looks like:
A) a poster – a project ? printing ? shipping ? hanging the poster ? removing the poster ?
disposal,
B) DS screen – a project ? broadcast on the screen via the Internet.

Digital signage is a very broad concept, which consists of many elements. Today, however, I want to show what a simple DS set consists of.

Advertising screen – the tip of the iceberg

First, we start by choosing the screen – we determine its size, brightness, position and working time. Everyone who begins to study the topic of advertising screens focuses on this element. From the point of view of mounting, an advertising screen is a user’s device that performs certain commands. It’s only used to display various types of graphic materials. The screen can display images and videos via a flash drive – this is the simplest way and it requires the least financial contribution at the beginning, but it works only in individual sets that don’t require changes of the displayed material.

If we want to be able to manage the screen remotely to control the display of relevant materials and have a system that informs us about defects, we need a player.

Player – the heart of digital signage systems

A player is a computer with the operating system (mostly Windows or Android). It can be a miniature computer or a regular desktop computer. At Localscreens, we most often use Minix, because these computers are small, relatively cheap and popular, which ensures smooth supplementation.

Digital signage software

It’s a program that’s installed in the player. It controls switching on and off of the screen, plays videos, boards or a website in due times. It also screens the advertising loop, sends us a signal if it detects any malfunction.

Server – no worries, the server is at Localscreens

If you purchased our player, the digital signage program in your player connects to our server via the Internet. This allows you to manage the screen using the management panel. We professionally call it CMS (Content Management System).

CMS – ours is called StudioPro or StudioLite (we have different versions for different users)

It’s a website account that allows you to manage the display of materials. It’s similar to logging to your email box. Here you set videos, boards and the order and time of display. You can also set the screen to turn on and off.

Mounts – now some mundane things

The screen needs to hang somewhere. There are several types of mounts that are used to hang screens.

Wall mount – a simple wall mounting; you need 4 wall plugs, a drill and it’s done. We hang the screen on the mount, and put the player behind the screen (don’t worry, it’ll fit). If you’ve ever assembled a piece of furniture from Ikea, then you’ll definitely be fine. But if you need help with mounting, we can do it for you.

Shoulder mount – wall-mounted with the additional arm. Thanks to this, we can mount the screen, e.g. in a corner, rotate it to one side or the other.

Ceiling mount – a slightly higher level of complexity –you’ll need a ladder. The ceiling mount is a tube (of various lengths, adjustable or not) and a screen mount. You fix it to the ceiling with expansion plugs or screws. Wires usually run in the tube to make the installation look good. The mount can be one-sided, two-sided or multi-sided. In this case, we usually provide mounting service, however, there are clients who are not strangers to working at a height and are able to mount the mounts themselves.

Totem – is a piece of furniture, usually metal, with a foot attached to the ground

Inside of the totem there’s a place for a screen together with a mount. Built-in wiring provides access to electricity and the Internet. We put the screen inside and lock it. The image on the screen is viewed through a vandal-proof glass.

Wiring – electricity and the Internet must be connected to each screen

Our clients usually prepare their own wiring. For wall and shoulder mounts, the wires are supplied from the suspended celling and covered with a decorative strip or hidden in the wall. In the case of ceiling mounts, the wires are delivered to the ceiling in special troughs, then enter the mount tube and the screen, thanks to which it looks very good. In the case of totems, much depends on how it’s positioned. If it stands against the wall, then the wires run from the wall. If it stands out of reach of clients, then skirting boards are used to cover the wiring. However, if the totem is placed in the center, e.g. of a shopping center, then you have to use the so-called electrical boxes placed in the floor. If such a box hasn’t been provided previously, place the wiring in the floor.

Mounting and transport

Plug & Play – inspired by a huge success of Ikea furniture, we decided to introduce a delivery model along the lines already adopted by the Swedish furniture manufacturer. By ordering the whole set, you get a configured advertising screen and a player so you just turn everything on and it starts working. You also get a mount and instructions for connecting all wires. In addition, you get a set of stickers from Localscreens, with phone numbers of our service. The courier brings all the elements to the specifies address and you can start mounting. If you can’t deal with something, call our service.

Mounting by a technician

The technician arrives, mounts the screens and wiring. The customer approves the acceptance report and the screen works. The cost of such service depends on the distance from the place of mounting, the time spent, and whether work must be done at night or during the day.

Summing up, the installation of advertising screens consists of several elements to keep in mind.

1. Advertising screen
2. Player
3. CMS software
4. Mounts
5. Wiring
6. Mounting
